MPs set out their views as assisted dying debate begins

MPs are debating the final stage of a bill which could legalise assisted dying in England and Wales.

They are allowed to vote in accordance with their personal views, rather than along party lines.

As the debate got under way, Labour’s Kim Leadbeater, who put forward the bill, said the legislation offered “a compassionate and safe choice to terminally ill people who want to make it”.

Meanwhile, Conservative MP James Cleverly raised concerns that sufficient safeguards were not in place.
